Seedings, scheduling, and soft division winners are watering down January football — and nobody wants to say it out loud.
January football should feel like a knife fight. Right now it feels like a participation trophy with better lighting.
We keep pretending every division winner earned the home game. Some of them barely survived soft schedules and still get protected seeding while hotter wild-card teams hit the road. That is not competitive integrity. That is calendar management.

If you want the best teams playing deep into the postseason, stop handing out gifts for winning a weak division. Seed by record. Full stop. Let the chaos be earned on the field, not manufactured by geography.
The league loves drama until the drama exposes its structure. Then suddenly everyone talks about "tradition." Tradition is fine. Bad seeding is not tradition — it is laziness dressed up as nostalgia.
Why it matters
Fans can smell a soft bracket. Players know who ducked who. And when a 9–8 team hosts a 12–5 squad because of a division label, the product takes the hit.
No filter: protect the games people actually care about. Seed the best teams highest. Everything else is noise.
